Study on fuel sourcing and consumption pattern in FCT by ITC.

The study was focused on different sources of fuel and consumption patterns in the Tobacco cultivation areas of Karnataka state with the following objectives.

Type of Fuel–Find out fuel forms used in Tobacco curing in the region.

Quantity of Fuel– Assess the quantity of wood fuel required for leaf curing (Specific Fuel Consumption).

Energy Conservation– Energy saving practices adopted in Tobacco curing.

Sources of Fuel- To understand the different sourcing original of fuel in the region.

Findings:

  • Farmers are well educated about the tree, cultivation, and its calorific value in tobacco curing.
  • Most of the farmers use Eucalyptus root for curing.
  • They are aware about the usage of alternate sources of fuel such as Coffee husk and Coconut shell.
  • Further, they are aware that Energy efficient barns are consuming less fuel compared to non-EC barns. However, there is a scope to increase the energy efficiency.
  • Most of the farmers grow a few trees in their land particularly for the tobacco curing and for their own needs.
  • There is a need to increase awareness on the tree planting culture.

The yield for the current year has drastically decreased due to heavy rain and consumed more wood due to more moisture content in the green leaf.
